Inspiration – Egypt

I have long been inspired by ancient history and the foremost topic of Egyptology. This last week saw the anniversary of Howard Carter’s birth, 9 May 1974. With the backing of Lord Carnarvon, Carter discovered Tutenkhamun’s tomb, the most famous and intact of all the tombs.

Much has been written about this subject and there are artefacts all over the world to provide inspiration. I would recommend a visit to the Ashmolean and the British Museum, and if you are lucky enough to travel further there are excellent artefacts to be found in America and Egypt itself.

First I take a broad look at a subject and then narrow down my interest to the things that really strike me that I can work with and inject my own feelings and artistic values into to hopefully produce something that is me.

I find Egyptology fascinating, but have yet to travel to Egypt. At a younger age, it was the pyramids that provided the interest, now it is papyrus, the style of drawing and art, the imagery, colour, hieroglyphs and different artefacts. When my son was younger, about 12 to 15 years ago, we made canopic jars. Egypt is also a rich source of ideas for jewellery.

I plan to dye some fabrics in Egyptian blues and golds and produce rich textile surfaces to reflect the influence.

Inspirations – recycling and quilts

How time flies. I’ve been busy for a couple of weeks having a massive spring clean. I didn’t realise that it’s a month since I had posted on the Inspirations blog.

So here are some thoughts. I, like many other lovers of fabrics and all things that glitter and sparkle, and some that don’t, now have a huge collection of fabrics and related items for embellishing bought over a long period of time. Some have been bought for particular projects never made, others just in case, one day I need an orange silk with elephants on it. This, I assure you, is a good thing to have. One can never have enough fabric, except when you run out of space and you discover that too much is really too much. Far better to follow the maxim less is more.

It’s not just fabrics for making things. I have huge quantities of clothes. Some still with the labels on that I am sure one day I shall fit into, except that some of them are years old and came out of the shopping bag into the wardrobe, suitcase, under bed storage. As a conservative estimate I probably have enough clothes for 3 or 4 people, or at least that’s all I am admitting to. Then there are my other collections – books, Heavens, I must be the world’s most avid bookaholic.

So enough of my foibles. I decided to halve just about everything I own. Things have been bagged, boxed, skipped, sent to charity shops, sold and some have escaped their destiny when no-one was looking and ended up back in my possession. Yes, there are some things I just cannot part with. Seriously, (no that’s not the word) thinking of doing a car boot sale – perish the thought.

I look at some of the clothes that never fit and dreamily plan what to make them into instead – they are such good materials – silk, satin, lace and velvet. This is the reason I was lured into buying them. It seems to me they would make good bags, jackets and so on.

Then I looked again at the work of quilter Dirkje van der Horst-Beetsma, who wrote a wonderful book entitled ‘And Then There Was Light’. Dirkje uses small pieces of materials almost like a mosaic. I love her work. Everything once loved and never used can have a new lease of life. Hopefully I have learned to only buy things that fit and then only if I need them and not when the fancy takes me.

The work shown below is copyright Dirkje van der Horst-Beetsma.
